About the Role

Flex is on a mission to change the way people pay for the things that matter most — starting with rent. As a Senior Engineer on our Consumer Product Engineering team, you’ll be part of the orchestration layer — a small, focused team responsible for the app-friendly APIs that connect our mobile and web apps to Flex’s core platform services. You’ll design, develop, test, and scale the APIs that sit at the heart of our customer experience, abstracting the complexity of rent payment processing into seamless, reliable interactions for our users.

This is a role for a product-minded backend engineer who stays grounded in the experience their code enables. You’ll work in close partnership with Product, Design, and Engineering peers to solve our users’ most pressing problems around rent payment, shipping changes in an agile cadence that favors small, frequent iterations. You’ll lead scoping, design, and implementation for the APIs you own and drive production rollouts to completion with a high degree of independence.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, test, and scale app-friendly service APIs consumed by Flex’s mobile and web applications
• Own end-to-end delivery of API features — from scoping and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production operation to SLA
• Partner closely with Product and Design to shape requirements, pressure-test specs, and deliver consumer experiences that simplify the complexity of rent payment for our customers
• Lead scoping and technical design for the APIs and orchestration services you own, driving rollouts to completion with minimal oversight
• Build robust, fault-tolerant integrations between consumer-facing APIs and core platform services, ensuring reliability and performance at scale
• Write elegant, well-tested Java code and provide constructive code reviews that elevate team standards
• Integrate AI-assisted development tools into your daily workflow and mentor teammates on responsible, effective usage
• Collaborate across engineering, product, and business stakeholders to align on scope, set clear expectations, and communicate progress proactively

What You’ll Bring

• 6+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years working in Java
• Proficiency in Java frameworks and tooling used at Flex: Spring (Core/Web/Boot), Gradle, JUnit, and JVM tuning (memory, performance, GC)
• Experience designing and building consumer-facing products — you understand what it means to ship for real users at scale
• Strong foundation in Service-Oriented Architecture, REST APIs, message queues, and scalable distributed systems
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (EKS, Aurora RDS, ElastiCache, DynamoDB) and containerization
• Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and working with big data platforms such as Snowflake
• Proficiency with CI/CD systems (preferably GitHub Actions), git, and observability/monitoring tools such as Datadog
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (CDK, Terraform) and a track record of writing clean, maintainable, production-grade code
• Comfort working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, with strong written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and a thoughtful approach to evaluating their output for correctness, security, and alignment with team standards

 

Flex takes a market-based approach to pay, and compensation may vary depending on your primary work location. Work locations are categorized into one of three tiers based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be commensurate with their experience, qualifications, and Flex’s internal leveling guidelines and benchmarks.
